Ponoko is a web based, on-demand, manufacturer (the very abbreviated description). They offer a service to designers, (anyone really) that combines the infrastructure required to create objects, sell them, and even collaborate with others within their own community.
While I really like the idea and have considered using the site from time to time, the aspects I find most interesting and informative at the moment are the instructional blog articles. They are written in such a way that anyone can understand the ideas, yet they contain really useful tips on a range of subjects such as web based selling, production tolerances and general design ideas.
I was down in McLaren Vale yesterday tasting a variety of the local grape juices and while we found some great wines, the highlight was found over lunch in the form of Vale Ale. This is a great tasting locally produced pale ale, but the element that really made it stand out to me was the fantastically crisp and classy packaging design.
I've never been a skater, my un-powered transport always being two wheeled, but I've always been a keen observer from the sidelines. This is a skate video like I've never seen, every element is different, the music, the tricks, the shooting. The chain grind is certainly a highlight.
