Some assembly required

Twice in the past week or so I've come across great images of complex systems laid out in component form. Images like these have always fascinated me, they clearly illustrate the shear number of parts that go into seemingly simple products, and the mind-boggling volume involved in something like a car.

The photos below have been in my archive for a while (can't credit them) and the always captivate whenever they come up on my screen saver. You really have to zoom in to appreciate the details.

Cardboard stool

I would imagine that the vast majority of those who have studied design have faced the challenge of designing a seat from cardboard. I still come across photos of my efforts from first year and while it's not up to standard to post on here, I do think that it could be in interesting starting point from which to refine.

I have seen some really interesting solutions in the past but when I saw this one over at Wilson Brothers I was struck by the simplicity and elegance of the structure.
